Grounding and bonding
Equipment grounding conductors go by the breaker. Grounding electrode conductors go by the service conductors.
Bonding basics
- Main bonding jumper: neutral to ground at the service only. Past the service disconnect, keep neutrals and grounds on separate bars (250.24, 250.142(B)).
- Separately derived systems (most transformers): bond neutral to ground at one point, at the transformer or the first disconnect, and run a GEC from there (250.30).
- Subpanels in a separate building: 4-wire feeder (separate EGC), neutral isolated, plus its own grounding electrode (250.32).
- Service raceways and enclosures need bonding that can carry fault current: bonding bushings or jumpers around concentric or eccentric knockouts (250.92, 250.94 intersystem bonding terminal).
- Bonding jumper sizes on the supply side follow Table 250.102(C)(1); on the load side, Table 250.122.
