How it works
A receptacle grips plug blades with spring-metal contacts behind each slot. Every insertion flexes them, and heat from heavy loads softens the metal over time, so old or cheap receptacles lose their grip. A loose grip is more than an annoyance: a blade that barely touches carries current through a tiny contact area, which heats and can arc.
